How to Claim Your Facebook Handle (And Why It Matters for Your Business)

by | Mar 3, 2026 | Business Ownership | 0 comments

Recently, we’ve noticed that many of our members have not claimed their Facebook handle — and it shows up more obviously than you might think.

When a handle is not claimed, your page link often looks something like this:

facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083729184726

That long string of numbers isn’t memorable, isn’t professional, and makes it harder for customers (and the Chamber!) to tag or share your business.

When your handle is claimed, it looks clean and branded, like this:

facebook.com/WarriorRiverCoffee
facebook.com/NextGenAutoDetail
facebook.com/AngryGoatTattoo

See the difference?

If you own a business and you’re on Facebook, claiming your custom Facebook handle is one of the simplest — and most important — digital housekeeping tasks you can complete.

Your Facebook handle is your unique username (for example: @WarriorRiverCoffee) and it creates your direct link:

facebook.com/YourBusinessName

Instead of a long, confusing URL filled with numbers, your business gets a clean, searchable, and professional web address.

Here’s how to claim it.

Step 1: Make Sure You’re an Admin

You must be an admin of your Facebook Business Page to set or change your handle.

To check:

  • Go to your Facebook Page

  • Click Settings

  • Select Page Access

  • Confirm you are listed as a Page admin

If you’re not, you’ll need the current admin to grant you access.

Step 2: Go to Your Page Settings

  • Open your business page

  • Click About (on desktop) or tap the three dots on mobile

  • Look for the Username section

If you haven’t claimed one yet, it will say:

Create @username

Step 3: Choose Your Handle

Your handle:

  • Must be unique

  • Must be at least five characters

  • Can include letters, numbers, and periods

  • Cannot include spaces or special characters

Best practices:

  • Keep it consistent with your business name

  • Match it to your Instagram handle if possible

  • Avoid extra dashes or numbers unless absolutely necessary

Good examples:

  • @WarriorRiverCoffee

  • @NextGenAutoDetail

  • @AngryGoatTattoo

If the exact name is taken, try adding your city or state:

  • @NextGenAutoDetailAL

  • @AngryGoatTattooWarrior

Avoid options like:

  • @WarriorRiverCoffee12345

Keep it clean and brand-aligned.

Step 4: Save It

Once you find an available username:

  • Click Create Username

  • Confirm

  • Save

That’s it. Your page now has a clean, branded link.

Why This Matters

Claiming your handle helps you:

  • Look more professional

  • Be easier to tag in posts

  • Be easier to find in search

  • Keep branding consistent across platforms

  • Protect your business name

It also makes it easier for the Chamber and other community partners to tag and promote your business correctly.

When someone wants to tag:

  • @WarriorRiverCoffee

  • @NextGenAutoDetail

  • @AngryGoatTattoo

They can find you instantly.

Pro Tip for Chamber Members

Once you claim your handle:

  • Send it to us so we can tag you properly

  • Make sure your contact information is updated

  • Add it to your website, business cards, flyers, and email signature

Your digital presence matters — and small steps like this build stronger visibility.

If you need help claiming your handle, we’re happy to walk you through it.
